The Evolving Journey with Yoga: From Rigor to Restorative — My Yoga Journey
The Rising Popularity of Yoga in the West
Yoga has surged in popularity in western countries, captivating many with its blend of physical and mental exercises. While most gravitate towards dynamic, strength-intensive, and heat-infused yoga practices, traditional forms that are gentler and more rejuvenating hold a special essence, staying true to yoga's original ethos.

Finding Refuge in Yoga During Difficult Times
My initiation into yoga wasn't for fashion or trend, it was a sanctuary I sought amidst life's tempests. Life seemed overwhelming with the aftermath of college, the painful loss of my father, the weight of a toxic relationship, and a battle with body image. Exercise, particularly running, became my coping tool until a painful injury halted my strides. It was then that someone advised me to delve into yoga.
First Experiences: The Intensity of Bikram Yoga
Venturing into Bikram Hot Yoga in Hawaii’s heat, I was struck by the incredible flexibility and fitness of the practitioners around me. But as someone grappling with body image issues, this style posed challenges. A casual comment from an instructor about my knees was a poignant reminder of how this form wasn't nurturing my needs. Recognizing that my knees had a hyperextension issue, the practice felt increasingly detrimental.
Transitioning to Baptiste Power Vinyasa
Hoping to leave my troubles behind, I moved to Seattle, dreaming of a fresh start. But escaping oneself isn't that simple. Corporate life there seemed draining, yet discovering a Baptiste Yoga studio brought some solace. The intensive workouts followed by the serene moments of Savasana seemed therapeutic. Baron Baptiste's words on the clarity that comes after an exhaustive workout resonated deeply.
My subsequent academic pursuit in Chinese Medicine shed light on the downsides of excessive strenuous practices. However, in those challenging times, the serenity after a demanding yoga session was my only refuge. This peaceful interlude catalyzed my journey into holistic health.
Embracing the Soothing Essence of Yin Yoga
As I near 40, I've found a profound affinity for Yin Yoga. With age, the body yearns for gentler, recuperative routines. Continual intense workouts can strain the body, impacting metabolism and energy levels.
Yin Yoga, for me, is like a meditative voyage, sometimes evoking strong emotions. The prolonged postures help delve deep, releasing tension from fascia and muscles, and fostering enhanced flexibility— a preventive measure against potential injuries. Sometimes, taking a moment to pause and immerse oneself in tranquility is all that’s needed.
Namaste
In the vast realm of yoga, from the dynamic to the restorative, it's essential to find what resonates with one’s journey. It's not just about the poses but the profound transformation and self-awareness they bring.
